Description


The sycamore has a narrow to broad sapwood, with a whitish or yellowish to slightly reddish colour. The heartwood is reddish grey. Flamed, figured, spotted, finely needle-cracked matt and strikingly shiny, this is the texture of the sycamore, which also makes it very decorative. The growth ring boundaries and wood rays are visible to the naked eye, and the wood rays also determine the texture.

Occurrence

Sycamore is widespread in Europe (except N and NE) and in North America.


Trunk and bark

Sycamore reaches a height of up to 50m and a diameter of up to 3m. The bark of young Sycamore trees is dark grey to brown. With age, the bark of the sycamore flakes off in thin plates, the younger bark underneath is yellow-grey.


Characteristics and wood colour

The pores are small and scattered. Medullary rays large and conspicuous, distinct annual rings, strongly grained, very decorative. The sapwood is narrow to broad, whitish or yellowish to slightly reddish. Heartwood only blurred, reddish grey: steamed wood freshly wine red, later darkening reddish brown to brown.
