Occurrence

Found throughout Europe, except in the north and north-east, also in Asia Minor, the Caucasus and the USA.

Trunk and bark

The cherry tree is a fast-growing tree that can reach an age of about 100 years, a height of up to 30m and a diameter of up to 1m. The trunk is straight and cylindrical and usually has no branches up to about 6m. The bark of the cherry tree is reddish grey, shiny, with broad, rust-coloured lenticels, very tough, smooth when young, later ringed bark, similar to birch.

Characteristics and wood colour

The wood is ring-porous and the annual ring is very distinct. The radial section is striped due to differently coloured annual rings, and the fine medullary rays appear as brightly shining mirrors. The sapwood and heartwood of the cherry tree are only slightly different. The sapwood is narrow, yellowish or reddish, while the heartwood is pale brownish to reddish when freshly cut, later darkening to reddish brown.
