Description
Ovengkol is a coarse-grained wood that is visually very similar to European walnut. This wood is often used to build instruments such as acoustic guitars. It has a slight alternating twist and more or less a regular colour striation. The heartwood is yellowish to olive-brown, the sapwood whitish-yellowish.

Occurrence
Ovengkol (also called Amazakoue or Shedua) grows in the tropical forests of West Africa – mainly in Cameroon, Gabon, Ghana, and Ivory Coast. Closely related to Bubinga, it is part of the Guibourtia genus. The tree reaches heights up to 45 m and diameters of 1.5 m. It is considered a sustainable and elegant hardwood for decorative use.
Trunk and Bark
The trunk is straight and cylindrical; the bark is gray-brown, thin, and scaly. The sapwood is light yellow-gray, while the heartwood is medium to dark brown with olive, violet, or golden stripes. Its striking color variation gives Ovengkol its distinctive exotic look.
