With about 800 species, eucalyptus is one of the most diverse and economically important woods. The heartwood varies quite a lot in colour, it can be from light to pinkish brown to dark brown. The pores are relatively coarse, rather scattered and often arranged obliquely-radially. The grain is straight or only slightly alternating.

Occurrence

Eucalyptus is widespread over the whole mainland of Australia, but in the south-west only on some coastal streeks, absent in Tasmania.

Trunk and bark

Eucalyptus is a tree up to 30m tall with a diameter of up to 2.5m, which can reach heights of up to 50m under favourable growing conditions. Long-stemmed with moderately developed branches. The bark is whitish, initially smooth, later rough and grooved.

Characteristics and wood colour

Eucalyptus is moderately heavy and has a wavy structure. The wavy structure makes it resistant and very durable, often cracked and interspersed with resin veins. The wood is red when fresh and later darkens to dark red, often with pretty grain-like markings.
