Swiss stone pine, also called Swiss stone pine, is a high mountain tree species and very rich in resin. The sapwood is yellowish-white, the heartwood yellowish-brown striped or figured. The annual rings of the Swiss stone pine are usually very narrow. The reddish-brown knots make this wood particularly decorative.

Occurrence

In Central Europe, especially in the Alps: Southern France, Switzerland, Austria and Bavaria at altitudes up to about 2000m, in the Kapathen at altitudes up to about 2400m, but also in northern Russia and Siberia.

Tree trunk and bark

Swiss stone pine is a tree up to 20m tall with diameters up to 0.4m, rarely well grown. The bark is smooth in pine when young and grey-green, later grey-brown and somewhat warty, thick, grey-brown and cracked when old.

Characteristics and wood colour

The numerous ingrown dark knots are characteristic of Swiss stone pine. The annual rings of the Swiss stone pine are very narrow, the resin channels large and numerous. Swiss stone pine is a decorative wood. The sapwood and heartwood are sharply separated in Swiss stone pine. The sapwood is yellowish-white with a silky sheen, while the heartwood is light reddish when fresh, but quickly darkens to the shade of pine when exposed to light.
